Special Education

At P.S. 58, we provide services within the NYC Department of Education Special Education Continuum to meet the needs of all learners. If needed, an Individualized Education Program (IEP) can be developed to support your child’s academic success.

The first step is an evaluation to determine if your child has a disability and requires special education services. This request must be made in writing by you or a school representative. Some services, such as Occupational Therapy or Physical Therapy, require a doctor’s prescription. Nursing, transportation, and health paraprofessional services may also require a doctor’s report.

After evaluations are complete, the Committee on Special Education (CSE) will review the information and decide if your child qualifies for services. Each recommendation is reviewed annually as part of the IEP process.

Programs & Services

General Education with Related Services
Related services help students with disabilities succeed in their educational program. These services are provided in the least restrictive environment and coordinated with teachers and families. The IEP will list the type of service, how often it is provided, session length, group size, language, and location. If the school cannot provide a service, a Related Service Authorization (RSA) will be issued so parents can use an approved provider at no cost.

Special Education Teacher Support Services (SETSS)
SETSS provides specially designed instruction from a special education teacher while your child remains in a general education classroom. Instruction may include adapted content, visual aids, or simplified directions. SETSS can be provided in the classroom or in a separate location, individually or in small groups (up to eight students), for at least three hours per week.

Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT)
ICT classrooms include students with and without IEPs. A general education teacher and a special education teacher work together to provide instruction and adapt lessons as needed. ICT may be full-time or part-time, and the IEP will specify the subjects and periods for ICT services.

Special Class Services
Special Class Services are provided in a self-contained classroom for part or all of the school day. A 12:1:1 class includes up to twelve students, one special education teacher, and one paraprofessional. Instruction is adapted to meet individual needs while ensuring access to the general education curriculum.
